As much as coach Frank Vogel wanted to bring home the message that the break would not start until after the Indiana Pacers played the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, it was hard to escape the All-Star elephant in the room.
Before the game, Vogel took part in a special presentation with Paul George and Roy Hibbert as the pair of All-Stars received framed jerseys.
George thanked the Bankers Life Fieldhouse crowd for their support, while Hibbert implored fans to “make sure you vote for this guy on Twitter,” referencing George’s appearance in the slam dunk contest Saturday.
The dunk king will be decided by the fans’ vote, so it truly will be a popularity contest.
While George has an obligation to entertain the masses, his defensive-minded teammate could be a harder sell to assimilate to the All-Star ways during the game Sunday night.
“I’m going to be serious. I’m going to do what I do, but I’m not going to go out there and be out of character,” said Hibbert. “I’m not going to get myself injured or embarrassed out there.”
However, George predicts that Hibbert will break out at least one entertaining move.
“He knows how to get a crowd involved,” George said. “Roy’s going to have fun with it. You might see Roy shoot some corner 3s or stuff like that. Roy is a fun guy … He’s going to understand it’s an all-star game and he’s going to have some fun with it.”
